What me worry? David Cameron is doing his chilled, insouciant best to pretend that the outcome of the EU debacle (sorry, debate) was no concern of his. He didn't have "a dog in the fight", he says. Neither of the contenders' positions had anything to do with him. None of his business what these two "extremists" (one of whom is his Deputy Prime Minister) did to each other. No sir. This was just a squalid mud-wrestle between two people he hardly knew. He was a bystander to the crash and fully intends to just walk on by. The result (whatever it was, he was hardly paying attention) had no consequences for him whatever. Yeah right. Of all the desperate, whistling-in-the-dark responses to a political catstrophe I have ever heard, this one pretty much wins the cup. Just in case Mr Cameron is actually delusional – and not just fibbing – let me spell it out. What Nigel Farage's spectacular triumph means for the Conservatives is that Ukip can no longer be dismissed as an inconsequential party of – how did it go? – fruitcakes, bigots and some other term of abuse. Its official views, at least as represented by its extremely fluent and plausible leader, are now resoundingly and irreversibly accepted as a respectable part of the political landscape. Nor can Mr Cameron simply decide that his position as he describes it – smack in the mathematical centre of the argument – has remained unaffected. He is not simply free to pursue his "renegotation" of our relationship with the EU as if nothing had happened. What Mr Farage's winning argument has done is raised the stakes for any future negotiated agreement and the referendum which will follow it. The public will be less likely (or even less likely) to accept a cosmetic fudge of any new terms: their awareness of what is at stake in our present relationship with EU institutions will be heightened. They will be less ready to be shmoozed into believing that a bit of blur around the edges constitutes meaningful change. No, Mr Cameron, you are not untouched by Nick's disaster.
